TRAINING OPTION 1

Online, self-paced Indigenous Engagement Training app is now available. All registrants are screened to confirm the program is a good fit. This process starts by completing this short online survey; followed by a cell/ZOOM video call.

A First Nation perspective not readily available ...

The perspectives in this Indigenous Engagement Training program are not found in universities or colleges. These insights come from lived First Nation experience—beyond academic or consultant expertise.

You will gain a clear understand of the following:

  • why there are only two categories of  Indigenous reconciliation,
  • why the term 'reconciliation' does not apply to Indigenous/non-Indigenous relationship-building processes,
  • why reconciliation progresses so slowly in Canada and the real barriers that impede it,
  • the obstacles to reconciliation: and
  • the missed leadership opportunities related to reconciliation,
  • the missed leadership identification (but not lost) that are crucial to any Indigenous relations training program.

Other topics that are clarified, include:

'Common Misconceptions', 'Magnitude', 'Red Flag', and 'Reflections' thought boxes are used throughout the course, blending lived experience with content that highlights how these issues play out across the rest of Canada,

  • colonial terms, including  'Aboriginal', 'Native', 'Indigenous', 'First Nation', 'status Indian', 'Métis', 'Inuit' and 'band office',
  • Why so many Indigenous relations and reconciliation departmentss, agencies, commissions exist throughout the country and at every level of government and within corporate entities, and
  • Indigenous life pre-, at- and post-contact with European settlers.

Missing component in reconciliation dialogue across Canada? Answer: 'GRASPING the MAGNITUDE.'

Learn to recognize the 'magnitude' of colonization and assimilation of Indigenous peoples.

  • Canada’s colonization section doesn’t examine colonial tools in isolation; it considers colonization and assimilation as an interconnected whole. Canada's Indian Act + Indian Reserve System + Indian Residential Schools + Christian Churches + RCMP + band administration offices (i.e., development corporations) = systemic racism & colonization.

  • This learning program does what other training programs do not - compare non-Indigenous residential areas with Indian reserve communities. This is where 90& of the magnitude of colonization is missed. Issues such as privilege, systemic racism are brought into the open.

  • This program does not shy away from sensitive subjects such as the surrender of parental rights, the issue of unmarked graves, and racism. We confront these topics directly because their impacts on First Nation communities remain profoundly significant.

TRAINING OPTION 3

LUNCH-n-LEARN sessions are available (see PDF poster below).

These sessions are not designed to make your teams experts in the area of Indigenous engagement. Rather, they are meant to strengthen knowledge foundations. They are meant to open minds to critical thinking on the most vulnerable, eye-opening topics.

Each session is designed for dialogue and not strictly presentation style.

The realities of reconciliation and the difficult truths of Canada’s complex history of colonization are clarified, using examples.

Q&A's are encouraged as the best conversations are often the toughest ones.

OPTIONAL: Lunch-n-Learn session + access to upcoming online Indigenous Engagement course for one representative.
